Patio vs Deck: Why a Deck Is the Perfect Addition to Your Home

For a lot of people, when they’re looking into enhancing their living space, one big choice they tend to make is getting a patio. When most people think of outdoor living spaces, yes, this is immediately what they think of. If you look online, that’s what most images are, too. So, what’s better, though, a deck or patio?

Patio or Deck? What's your preference?

Well, you could say that this is a common household issue, but a luxurious one that’s going to end up being very positive at the end of the day. Both options have their charms, but a deck offers unique benefits that make it a standout choice. Yes, you read that right; a deck might actually be a much better option. But how? But why? Well, here’s why you should consider adding a deck to your home.

Maximising Space and Versatility

One of the primary reasons to opt for a deck is the versatility it offers. So, for starters, you must remember that decks can be built on any terrain, making them perfect for uneven or sloped yards. Unlike patios, which require a flat surface, decks can be constructed at various levels and extend your home's usable space.

A deck is your only choice if you live in a hilly terrain or sloped area. But even if you live in a terrain or area that only allows for a deck (which is still a wonderful option), plus there’s a variety of materials (just like for patios) that you can choose from, such as Trex decking, others, so it doesn’t necessary always have to be that basic wood design or that brown colour either. Speaking of which….

Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal

Are all decks beautiful? Well, that’s hard to say, but a well-designed one can be such a show-stopper for most homes. If you take a look at posh editorial photos, such as on House Beautiful, you’re definitely going to find some gorgeous decks that come in a variety of materials, so you basically have options that will help you pick something that suits your home’s architecture.

Plus, the elevated nature of a deck also provides an unobstructed view of your surroundings, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy your garden or the scenery beyond your property.

Increasing Home Value

Alright, so technically, both patios and decks offer this, so there might be a chance one doesn’t really boost the value compared to the other. Again, it’s more based on the terrain of your yard. But if you live on a sloped plot of land, decking is your only option, but it’s still a great option.

Low Maintenance and Durability

Needless to say, deck materials are resistant to weather, insects, and decay! Yes, decks last a really long time, and hardly any maintenance needs to be done. Unlike patios, which may require regular cleaning and sealing to prevent cracking and weed growth, a deck requires little more than occasional cleaning. Sure, patios still need to be cleaned, and everything needs to be cleaned, but it’s not much effort, so this can last for decades.
